This re-print of the tenth edition has been updated with the inclusion of the supplement from the eleventh edition, the remainder of the engine type information being identical in all respects in both editions. The tenth edition was selected as being an important edition as it includes information on the Bond, Gordon and A. Petite three-wheel cars. This information was minimized and ultimately omitted from the subsequent editions.
The two editions re-printed by VelocePress were chosen as being the most comprehensive as they cover both a broad model range and extensive time-line of Villiers engines. This publication has been out-of-print and unavailable for many years and is becoming increasingly more difficult to find on the secondary market.

Villiers Engineering was a manufacturer of motorcycles and cycle parts, and an engineering company based in Villiers Street, Wolverhampton , England. In the s John Marston ‘s Sunbeam had become extremely successful by relying on high quality of production and finish. But Marston was dissatisfied with the pedals on his machines, which he bought in. In he dispatched his son Charles to the US on a selling trip, but included in his instructions that Charles must discuss pedal engineering with Pratt and Whitney in Hartford, Connecticut and come back with a high-class pedal and the machinery for making it.
Charles said that the Villiers Engineering Co. He pointed out that “it was not possible to develop these at Sunbeamland, which had long been working on another plan, but it was possible to start them in a new factory”. As a result of the tour, in , John Marston bought a small Japanning works based in Villiers Street, Wolverhampton. Most Villiers parts are well past their sell-by date now and things like as it is available to fit the 3⁄4in and 5⁄8in shaft models of Villiers engines.
TWO-STROKE engines with flat- topped pistons, of which the latest Villiers Junior de luxe engine is an example, differ from the more familiar deflector piston type chiefly in the design of the ports and in the characteristics of their performance. The operating principles are, broadly speaking, the same. For the benefit of those whose experience has hitherto been confined to purely pedal-propelled bicycles an explanation of the functioning of the two-stroke engine is included.
As the crank is turned through one revolution the piston travels once down and once up. Every down stroke is a firing stroke, i,e. In other words, there is one explosion in the cylinder for every revolution of the crank. If a study is made of the diagrams which illustrate the cycle of operations it will be. Sparking Plug : type

Villiers is another of those resonant names from the tangled history of 20th Century British mechanical engineering. In my youth, slightly unkempt men with too much hair in their ears, and eyebrows that could use the attentions of a small hedge trimmer, would wax lyrical about the Villiers two-horse-power-two-stroke this or the J. To me they just looked like knackered lawn mower engines but these corroding lumps of metal clearly had some, very well hidden, charm.
At the end of the nineteenth century John Marston was building aesthetically beautiful Sunbeam bicycles in aesthetically particularly un-beautiful Wolverhampton, England. However he considered the pedals he was using to be unworthy of his exquisite machines. Inspired by this visit, in , John bought a small factory in Villiers Street in Wolverhampton, to make bicycle components including pedals.
He installed Charles as the boss.

Can anyone help me date a Barford 15 and a Barford 30 from either the serial number or the engine number please. Hi, I cant help you with the serial numbers but the date of the engine is usually stamped on the outer edge of Villiers flywheels. I do not believe any of the old Barford of Belton production records remain as much paperwork and finished parts were scrapped during the British Leyland closure period.
My main contact who worked at Belton from the s through to closure in the s believes all to be destroyed. The usual format is, as stated, to date from the engine date on the flywheel edge and hope your machine is still fitted with the original engine.
